Spam is in the Eye of the Beholder

Sure, some Emails automatically (and deservedly) end up in the Spam folder without the recipient ever knowing, but what about the Emails that are X’d out of the Inbox purposely and personally by the intended recipient? With Email boxes flooded, it’s tougher than ever to get your message through.

Using Email to reach your audience remains an effective tool IF you remember some key rules; avoid the dreaded X with the following tips:

  1. Use a Creative Subject Line – try something fun.
  2. Send the Email from a Familiar and Trusted Source – use a name, not do_not_reply.
  3. Balance Text with Images – don’t be too heavy with either.
  4. Communicate your Message Clearly, Succinctly and Creatively – say enough, but not too much.
  5. Give Something to the Reader – maybe a How To List, or a Coupon, or a Joke
  6. Include a Call to Action – Tell a Friend, Call Your Legislator, Make a Donation.
Communicate well. Don’t give the reader even one reason to think your message is nothing more than spam.
